What is it?
The Budget Calculator splits your monthly take-home pay into needs, wants and savings. It uses the popular 50/30/20 rule, or percentages you choose.
Who is it for?
Young earners with a first salary, families trying to save more, and anyone who feels money disappears by the month’s end.
How to use it
Enter your take-home income (after tax and PF). Change the percentages for needs, wants and savings if you like. The answer appears as you type; there is no Calculate button. Pick your Currency at the top if asked, then tap Copy result or Share on WhatsApp.
What goes where
- Needs: rent, food, bills, EMIs, school fees, insurance, transport to work.
- Wants: eating out, shopping, trips, subscriptions, gadgets.
- Savings: SIPs, PPF, emergency fund, and extra loan prepayments.
Adjusting the rule
The 50/30/20 rule is a starting point. In expensive cities needs may take more; try to keep savings at 20% or above. If needs take 60%, cut wants to 20% rather than savings. Saving 30% or more early in your career builds wealth fast.
Making it work
- Pay yourself first: set SIPs and RDs to go out on salary day.
- Track spending for one month (the Money Manager tool helps) to see where money really goes.
- Review the budget when income or rent changes.
Errors and how to fix them
- The three shares must add up to 100%: adjust needs, wants and savings so they total 100.
