Brick Calculator: Bricks and Cement for a Wall

What is it?

The Brick Calculator tells you how many bricks you need for a wall. It also shows bricks per cubic metre, the wall volume and roughly how many cement bags the mortar needs.

Who is it for?

People building houses, boundary walls or extra rooms, contractors and masons.

How to use it

  1. Enter Wall length and Wall height.
  2. Choose the Wall thickness: 9 inch (230 mm, full brick) or 4.5 inch (115 mm, half brick).
  3. Choose the Brick size (with 10 mm mortar): India modular, India standard, UK or US modular. Set the Extra for breakage.

Before you calculate

An estimate: subtract doors and windows from the wall size first. Mortar is about a quarter of the wall volume. A door is roughly 2.1 m × 1 m.

Good to know

  • Local bricks vary in size; measure one and choose the closest option.
  • Allow 5% extra for breakage, more for cheaper bricks.
  • Interior partition walls are often 4.5-inch; outer and load-bearing walls 9-inch.
  • AAC blocks and fly-ash bricks have different sizes and use less mortar.

These are estimates for planning and buying. For structural work, follow your engineer’s or contractor’s quantities.

Worked example

A 10 m × 3 m wall, 9-inch thick, with standard bricks: about 3,300 bricks plus 5% breakage.

Errors and how to fix them

  • Too many bricks: subtract doors and windows from the wall first.
