Breathing Exercise: Box Breathing, 4-7-8 and Calm Breathing

What is it?

The Breathing Exercise guides slow, steady breathing with a calm animated circle and gentle tones. Choose a Pattern (box breathing, 4-7-8, 4-6 calm or coherent breathing) and a Length, then follow the circle.

Who is it for?

Students before exams, people before interviews or hard conversations, anyone with trouble falling asleep, and anyone needing a minute of calm.

How to use it

  1. Pick the Pattern and Length.
  2. Tap Start. Breathe in as the circle grows, hold, and breathe out as it shrinks.
  3. At the end you’ll see Session complete.

Which pattern?

  • Box (4-4-4-4): in, hold, out, hold; steadying before a stressful moment.
  • 4-7-8: in 4, hold 7, out 8; often used to fall asleep.
  • Coherent (about 5 in, 5 out): easy to do anywhere for a few minutes.

Breathing exercises help with everyday stress; they’re not a treatment for anxiety disorders or breathing conditions.

Errors and how to fix them

  • No tones: check the volume and silent mode, and tap the page once (browsers need a tap before sound).
  • Feeling dizzy: stop and breathe normally; choose a gentler pattern like 4-6 calm, with shorter holds.

Questions people ask

  • How long should I practise? Two to five minutes is enough to feel calmer.
  • Can I do it lying down? Yes, especially 4-7-8 before sleep.

Practical tip

Use it at the same time daily, such as before studying or sleeping, so the calm feeling becomes linked to the routine.
