How to Message Yourself on WhatsApp (Notes to Self)

WhatsApp has a chat with yourself. It works like a private notepad: send yourself shopping lists, reminders, photos, links or documents, and find them on every device where your WhatsApp is open.

Open your own chat

  1. Open WhatsApp and go to Chats.
  2. Tap the New chat button (the message icon: bottom right on Android, top right on iPhone).
  3. At the top of the contact list you will see your own name with (You) and "Message yourself". If not, search for your name or number.
  4. Tap it. Your chat opens; type and send like any other chat.

Tip: pin it so it stays on top. Press and hold the chat in the list and tap the pin (Android), or swipe right and tap Pin (iPhone). See pin, archive and mute chats.

Useful ways to use it

  • A shopping list or to-do list you can tick off by deleting lines.
  • Photos of your bill, gas booking number or prescription so you have them handy.
  • Moving a photo or file from your phone to the computer: send it to yourself on the phone, then open your chat on WhatsApp Web and download it.
  • A voice note to remember something while you are walking.
  • Star important notes (press and hold › star) to find them fast later.

Forward something to yourself

  1. In any chat, press and hold the message, photo or file.
  2. Tap Forward (the arrow).
  3. Pick your own name (it shows as You or "Message yourself") and send.

What is different from a normal chat

  • No calls, and you cannot mute, block or report this chat.
  • No last seen or online status is shown.
  • Messages are end-to-end encrypted like all personal chats.
  • It is included in your chat backup, so notes come back when you restore.

If it doesn't work

  • Your name is missing: update WhatsApp. On some older Android versions you may need to save your own number in Contacts and refresh the contact list.
  • Notes vanish: check that disappearing messages is off for this chat.

Safety tip

It is tempting to store passwords, ATM PINs or UPI PINs in your own chat. Don't. Anyone who picks up your unlocked phone, or who gets into your WhatsApp, would see them. Keep your phone locked and use chat lock for very private notes.

This is GroupChatOn’s own easy guide. We are not WhatsApp and are not linked with WhatsApp or Meta. WhatsApp sometimes changes its menus: if a button looks different on your phone, update WhatsApp from the Play Store or App Store.
