How to React and Reply to a Specific WhatsApp Message

In a busy group it gets confusing when everyone answers at once. A reaction (a quick emoji like 👍 or 🙏) says "seen and agreed" without a new message, and a reply quotes the exact message you are answering so everyone knows what you mean.

React with an emoji

  1. Press and hold the message (on a computer, move the mouse over it and click the smiley).
  2. A row of emojis appears. Tap one, or tap + to choose any emoji.
  3. Your emoji appears under the message.
  • You can add only one reaction per message. To change it, react again with another emoji.
  • To remove it, tap your reaction under the message and tap it again (or choose Tap to remove).
  • Tap the reactions under a message to see who reacted with what.
  • Only the person who wrote the message gets a notification for your reaction.

Reply to one message

  • Quick way (Android and iPhone): swipe the message to the right. A small copy of it appears above your typing box. Type your answer and send.
  • Other way: press and hold the message and tap Reply (the curved arrow).
  • WhatsApp Web: hover over the message, click the small down arrow, then Reply.

Changed your mind? Tap the x beside the quoted message before sending. In the chat, tapping a quoted message jumps up to the original, which is very handy in long groups.

Reply privately to someone in a group

  1. Press and hold their message in the group.
  2. Tap â‹® (More options) on Android or More on iPhone.
  3. Tap Reply privately. Your personal chat with that person opens with their group message quoted.

On WhatsApp Web: hover › down arrow › Reply privately.

Good manners in groups

  • Use a 👍 reaction instead of typing "ok" so other members are not disturbed.
  • Reply to the exact message when the group is talking about several things.
  • Take personal matters to a private reply.

If it doesn't work

  • No emoji row: update WhatsApp.
  • Can't reply in a group: the admins may allow only admins to send messages. You can still reply privately.
  • Swipe does nothing: swipe a little slower, starting on the message bubble itself.

Safety tip

Strangers in big groups sometimes use "Reply privately" to start friendly chats that end in job, investment or loan offers. If a group member you don't know messages you privately, be careful, never send money or codes, and block and report them if it feels wrong.

This is GroupChatOn’s own easy guide. We are not WhatsApp and are not linked with WhatsApp or Meta. WhatsApp sometimes changes its menus: if a button looks different on your phone, update WhatsApp from the Play Store or App Store.
