How to Change WhatsApp Language and Text Size

You can use WhatsApp in many Indian languages, including Hindi, Punjabi, Bengali, Marathi, Tamil and more, and make its letters bigger if they are hard to read. Android changes these inside WhatsApp; iPhone mostly uses the phone's own Settings app.

Change the language on Android

  1. Tap ⋮ › Settings.
  2. Tap App language (on some versions it is under Chats › App language).
  3. Pick your language, for example हिन्दी or ਪੰਜਾਬੀ.

The menus change at once. If your language isn't in the list, WhatsApp doesn't offer it yet; your chats can still be in any language.

Change the language on iPhone

On iPhone, WhatsApp has no language setting of its own: it uses the iPhone's language.

  1. Close WhatsApp and open the iPhone's Settings app (the grey gear).
  2. Tap General › Language & Region › iPhone Language.
  3. Pick a language and confirm. The whole iPhone, including WhatsApp, switches to it.

Want only WhatsApp in another language? If you have added more than one language under Language & Region, the iPhone's Settings › WhatsApp › Language lets you choose one just for WhatsApp.

Make text bigger on Android

  1. Tap ⋮ › Settings › Chats.
  2. Tap Font size and choose Small, Medium or Large.
  3. For even bigger letters everywhere, use the phone's Settings › Display › Font size (the exact name differs between Samsung, Vivo, Oppo, Xiaomi and others).

Make text bigger on iPhone

  1. Open the iPhone's Settings › Display & Brightness › Text Size.
  2. Drag the slider to the right for bigger text. WhatsApp follows it.
  3. Need more? Settings › Accessibility › Display & Text Size › Larger Text.

Other ways to read more easily

  • Dark theme: Android Settings › Chats › Theme › Dark; iPhone follows the phone's Dark Mode.
  • Send voice messages instead of typing.
  • To type in your language, add a Hindi or Punjabi keyboard in your phone's keyboard settings (for example Gboard › Languages).

If it doesn't work

  • Language didn't change: close WhatsApp fully and open it again; update the app. On iPhone, remember WhatsApp follows the phone's language.
  • Text still small in some places: the WhatsApp setting affects chats; use the phone's own text size too.
  • Changed to a language you can't read: the settings icons stay in the same place; follow the same taps back, or set the phone language back to English.

Good to know

Changing the language only changes WhatsApp's buttons and menus. Your messages are not translated, and other people see your messages exactly as you typed them.

This is GroupChatOn’s own easy guide. We are not WhatsApp and are not linked with WhatsApp or Meta. WhatsApp sometimes changes its menus: if a button looks different on your phone, update WhatsApp from the Play Store or App Store.
