A poll lets everyone in a chat vote with one tap instead of sending fifty "yes" and "no" messages. Open the chat, tap the attach button, choose Poll, type a question and the choices, and send.
When a poll helps
- Family group: "Which day suits everyone for the function?"
- Society or school parents group: "Who will come to the meeting?"
- Friends: "Which restaurant tonight?"
Votes are counted for you, so nobody has to scroll up and count replies.
On Android
- Open the group or personal chat.
- Tap the paperclip (attach) icon in the typing box.
- Tap Poll.
- Type your question, then type each choice on its own line under Options. A new empty line appears each time you fill one.
- Leave Allow multiple answers on if people may pick more than one choice. Turn it off if each person should choose only one.
- Tap the Send arrow.
On iPhone
- Open the chat and tap + next to the typing box.
- Tap Poll.
- Type the question and the options, set Allow multiple answers on or off, and tap Send.
On WhatsApp Web and the computer app, click + (attach) › Poll; the steps are the same.
Voting and seeing results
- To vote, tap the circle next to a choice. Tap it again to take your vote back, or tap another choice to change it.
- If the person who made the poll turned off multiple answers, tapping a new choice removes your earlier one.
- Bars and numbers show how many votes each choice has. Tap View votes to see the names of who voted for what. Votes are not secret: everyone in the chat can see them.
If it doesn't work
- No Poll option: update WhatsApp from the Play Store or App Store. Polls are a newer feature.
- You cannot post in the group: the admin may have set Send messages to admins only. Ask an admin to post the poll.
- Made a mistake in the question: settings and options cannot be changed after sending. Delete the poll (press and hold › Delete › Delete for everyone) and create a fresh one.
- Someone cannot vote: they may have an old version of WhatsApp. Ask them to update.
Safety tip
Because everyone sees who voted, don't use a group poll for private questions such as money, health or "who can lend me cash". Ask those things in a personal chat instead. And ignore "polls" forwarded from strangers that ask you to click a link to vote; real WhatsApp polls never open a website.
This is GroupChatOn’s own easy guide. We are not WhatsApp and are not linked with WhatsApp or Meta. WhatsApp sometimes changes its menus: if a button looks different on your phone, update WhatsApp from the Play Store or App Store.
