Tricky Riddles: How to Solve Wordplay Riddles and Read the Explanations

What is it?

Tricky Riddles is a collection of 40 riddles that play with words: a bank with no money, a key that opens no door, a letter that sounds like an insect. Each one hides a double meaning or a sound-alike word. We wrote them to be fair but not obvious, and after you solve one (or give up) a short explanation shows exactly how the trick works.

Who is it for?

Teenagers and adults who like wordplay, people learning English who want to discover double meanings, quiz hosts, and anyone who finds kids’ riddles too easy.

How to use it

  1. Read the riddle in the big box. The line above it shows its number, how many riddles there are and how many you have solved (βœ“ means this one is solved).
  2. Type your answer in the box and press Check (or Enter). A right answer shows Correct! πŸŽ‰, the answer and a short explanation.
  3. Stuck? πŸ’‘ Hint gives a clue; πŸ‘€ Answer shows the answer and why it is right.
  4. Move on with Next β–Ά, go back with β—€, or jump anywhere with πŸ”€ Random. Choose Not solved at the top to skip the riddles you have already cracked.
  5. Send the riddle (without the answer) to a friend with Share on WhatsApp or Copy. Open See all riddles with answers for the full list.

How to crack wordplay riddles

  • Read every word twice: the trick is usually one word with two meanings, such as bank (river or money), key (door or piano), bark (tree or dog) or bed (river or sleeping).
  • Say it aloud: some answers are sound-alikes, like the letter B and a bee.
  • Use the hint before the answer: the hint nudges you without giving it away, so you still get the β€œaha!” moment.
  • Choose Not solved to come back to the ones that beat you.

Errors and how to fix them

  • β€œYour answer…” shown in red: you pressed Check with an empty box. Type a guess first.
  • β€œNot quite. Try again, or take a hint.”: your answer did not match. Capital letters, β€œa” and β€œthe”, plurals, spaces and punctuation are already ignored, and common other wordings are accepted, so try another word for the same thing, or press πŸ‘€ Answer to compare.
  • I gave a fair answer but it was rejected: many riddles accept more than one wording (tap or faucet; photo, picture or selfie). If yours is a genuinely different answer, press πŸ‘€ Answer to see the one we meant.
  • β€œYou have solved them all! πŸ†β€: with Not solved chosen there is nothing left. Switch back to All to play them again.
  • My ticks and solved count are gone: progress is saved only in this browser on this device. A private (incognito) window, clearing site data, or another phone or browser starts from zero.
