Text Compare (Diff): Reading the Colours, Lines vs Words

What is it?

Text Compare shows exactly what changed between two versions of a text: a contract, an essay, code or a list.

Who is it for?

Students and teachers checking edits to an essay, lawyers and business owners comparing contract versions, developers comparing code or config, and editors seeing what a client changed.

How to use it

  1. Paste the Original text on one side and the Changed text on the other. Swap exchanges them; Try a sample shows an example.
  2. Choose Lines or Words.
  3. Read the result: green is added, red is removed, plain text is the same in both.

Lines or words?

  • Lines: best for code, lists and data, where each line is one item.
  • Words: best for paragraphs and documents, where a small edit inside a long line would otherwise mark the whole line changed.

Everything shows as changed

  • One version has different line breaks, for example text copied from a PDF. Run both through Text Cleaner with the same settings, then compare.
  • Different quotes or spaces (smart quotes, tabs, non-breaking spaces) count as changes. Clean both texts the same way first.
  • To compare Word or PDF files, copy their text out first (PDF to Text helps).

Is my text uploaded?

No. Everything happens inside your browser. Your text is kept in this browser only so it is still there if you reload, and Clear removes it.

Errors and how to fix them

  • Every line marked changed: different line breaks or spaces; clean both texts the same way first.
  • Very long texts are slow: compare section by section.
  • Sides swapped: tap Swap so the original is on the left.
