SWP Calculator: How Long Your Money Lasts With Monthly Withdrawals

What is it?

The SWP (systematic withdrawal plan) Calculator shows how long a sum lasts if you withdraw a fixed amount every month while the rest keeps earning.

Who is it for?

Retirees and people near retirement planning a monthly income from their savings.

How to use it

Enter the Starting amount, how much to Withdraw every month, the Expected return, and For how many years. Read Money lasts and Total withdrawn. The answer appears as you type; there is no Calculate button. Pick your Currency at the top if asked, then tap Copy result or Share on WhatsApp.

Choosing a safe withdrawal

  • If the monthly withdrawal is smaller than the monthly growth, the money lasts indefinitely.
  • A common guideline is to withdraw about 4–5% of the starting amount per year (0.33–0.4% a month) if the money must last 25–30 years.
  • Expenses rise with inflation, but a fixed SWP doesn’t. Plan to increase withdrawals, or start lower, and use the Retirement Calculator for that.

Market risk

Withdrawing from equity funds during a market fall sells more units at low prices, which can shorten how long money lasts (“sequence risk”). Many retirees keep 2–3 years of withdrawals in debt funds or FDs and the rest in equity.

Tax

Each SWP payment is partly your own money and partly gains; only the gains are taxed, as capital gains. That can be lower than tax on FD interest.

Mutual fund investments are subject to market risks; read all scheme-related documents carefully.

Errors and how to fix them

  • Money lasts “forever”: the withdrawal is below the monthly growth; that’s correct, not an error.
