Random Team Generator: Split Names Into Fair, Even Teams

What is it?

The Random Team Generator splits a list of names into random, even teams.

Who is it for?

Teachers making groups, coaches and friends picking sides, and office trainers forming teams fairly.

How to use it

  1. “Add the names, one per line”
  2. Choose Split by: Number of teams or People per team, and set How many.
  3. Optionally type Team names (optional, comma separated), like Red, Blue, Green.

If the names don’t divide exactly, some teams get one extra person.

Is it really random?

Yes. It uses your browser’s secure random number generator (the same kind used for passwords), so every result is equally likely and can’t be predicted or influenced.

Balanced teams

Random teams can end up uneven in skill. For sports, make two lists (stronger and other players), split each list into the same number of teams, and combine team 1 with team 1, and so on.

Ideas

  • Classroom projects and quiz teams.
  • Office games and training groups.
  • Cricket and football at the park.

Worked examples

  • 22 players, 2 teams: Split by Number of teams = 2 gives 11 and 11.
  • 23 students, groups of 4: People per team = 4 gives five groups of 4 and one of 3.
  • Office quiz with names: Team names = Lions, Tigers, Eagles; three teams with those names.

Fairness tips

  • Check every name is on the list once; duplicates get two places.
  • For mixed abilities, split good and new players into separate lists, make teams from each list, and join them.
  • For several rounds of a game, generate new teams each round so everyone plays with different people.

Share the teams

Copy the result and paste it in your class or office WhatsApp group so everyone sees which team they’re in.

Errors and how to fix them

  • “Add the names, one per line”: the list is empty or has only one name.
  • Uneven teams: names don’t divide exactly; one team gets an extra person.
  • Team names ignored: separate them with commas; extra teams get numbers.
