Projectile Motion Calculator: Range, Height and Time of Flight

What is it?

The Projectile Motion Calculator works out the path of a thrown or launched object, such as a ball. It shows how far it goes, how high it rises, how long it stays in the air and how fast it lands.

Who is it for?

Physics students, teachers, and sports fans curious about throws and kicks.

How to use it

Enter the Launch speed (m/s), Launch angle (degrees from the ground), Launch height and Gravity (Earth 9.81, Moon 1.62, Mars 3.71). The answer appears as you type; there is no Calculate button. Tap Copy result to copy it, or Share on WhatsApp to send it.

Good to know

  • It ignores air resistance. From the ground, 45° gives the longest range. Angles that add up to 90° (30° and 60°) give the same range from the ground.
  • From a height, the best angle is a little below 45°.
  • Speed in km/h ÷ 3.6 = m/s.

Real life vs the formula

Air drag shortens the range a lot for light or fast objects: a cricket ball, a football or a shuttlecock travel much less than the ideal result, and spin changes paths too. The formula is closest for heavy, slow objects over short distances.

Formulas

From the ground: range = v² × sin(2θ) ÷ g; maximum height = (v sin θ)² ÷ 2g; time = 2 v sin θ ÷ g.

Errors and how to fix them

  • “Enter the speed / gravity (more than 0)”
