Opposites and Pairs: Learn, Match Up and Quiz With Pictures

What is it?

Opposites and Pairs teaches 24 opposites (big and small, hot and cold, fast and slow, day and night) and 18 things that go together (lock and key, sock and shoe, bee and honey). Each pair has two pictures and is read aloud: “hot is the opposite of cold”, “lock goes with key”. Then play Match up or the Quiz.

Who is it for?

Pre-school and early primary children building vocabulary, speech and language practice at home, and teachers of early English.

How to use it

  1. Choose Opposites or Go together.
  2. In Learn, tap a card to hear the pair.
  3. In Match up, tap a word on the left, then its partner on the right. Correct pairs disappear; the counter shows how many are “to go”. At the end: “🎉 All matched with … slips!”
  4. Play the Quiz: “What is the opposite of fast?” or “What goes with key?”, eight questions.

Opposites or pairs?

Opposites mean the reverse of each other (full–empty). Pairs simply belong together (toothbrush–toothpaste). Here “light” goes with “heavy” because it means not heavy; in another sense light is the opposite of dark, a good example to talk about.

Tips for parents

  • Act them out: walk fast, then slow; speak loudly, then quietly.
  • Find opposites in picture books together.
  • Ask for a sentence with both words: “The elephant is big and the mouse is small.”

Errors and how to fix them

  • “First tap a word on the left”: in Match up, start from the left column, then choose the partner on the right.
  • Not that one, try again!: the right-hand word isn’t the partner; it counts as a slip, so the fewer the better.
  • No sound when I tap: the words are read by your device’s own voice. Turn the volume up and silent mode off, and check that a text-to-speech voice is installed (Android: Settings › Accessibility › Text-to-speech; iPhone: Settings › Accessibility › Spoken Content; Windows: Settings › Time & language › Speech). Hindi words need a Hindi voice; without one the tool says them in English or stays quiet.
  • “Not quite: the answer is shown in green”: only the first tap counts. Look at the green answer, say it aloud together, and the next question comes on its own. At the end the tool shows the score with stars (🌱 to ⭐⭐⭐).
