Net Worth Calculator: What You Own Minus What You Owe

What is it?

The Net Worth Calculator adds up what you own and takes away what you owe, to show what you are really worth. It also shows your total assets, total debts and how much of what you own is borrowed.

Who is it for?

Anyone tracking their financial progress, couples planning together, and people preparing for a loan or financial plan.

How to use it

  1. Under What you own: Cash and bank, Investments (FDs, funds, shares, PF), Property, Gold and jewellery, Vehicles and Other things you own.
  2. Under What you owe: Home loan, Car / personal loans, Credit cards and Other money owed.

Valuing things fairly

  • Use today’s market value, not what you paid: current fund NAVs, the gold rate for its weight and purity, and a realistic resale price for vehicles.
  • For property, use recent sale prices in your area, not asking prices.
  • Use the outstanding loan balance from your latest statement, not the original loan.

Reading the result

  • A negative net worth is common early in a career or just after buying a house. The direction matters more than the number.
  • A Debt to assets ratio under 50% is generally comfortable.
  • Your home counts, but you can’t spend it: also look at net worth without your own house.

Work it out every 6–12 months on the same date and compare. Nothing you enter leaves your device.

Errors and how to fix them

  • Negative net worth: debts exceed assets; common early on, not an error.
