What is it?
Maths Riddles is a set of more than 35 number puzzles we wrote ourselves: find a number from its clues, work out ages and prices, continue a sequence, count squares on a grid or race a snail up a wall. They range from warm-ups to genuinely clever puzzles, and each has a hint and a worked explanation.
Who is it for?
Students from about class 5 upwards, maths teachers looking for a starter, parents doing homework help, and adults who enjoy number puzzles.
How to use it
- Read the riddle in the big box. The line above it shows its number, how many riddles there are and how many you have solved (β means this one is solved).
- Type your answer in the box and press Check (or Enter). A right answer shows Correct! π, the answer and a short explanation.
- Stuck? π‘ Hint gives a clue; π Answer shows the answer and why it is right.
- Move on with Next βΆ, go back with β, or jump anywhere with π Random. Choose Not solved at the top to skip the riddles you have already cracked.
- Send the riddle (without the answer) to a friend with Share on WhatsApp or Copy. Open See all riddles with answers for the full list.
Worked example
A classic type in the set: a snail climbs 3 m up a 10 m wall each day and slips back 2 m each night. It does not take 10 days: after 7 days and nights it is at 7 m, and on day 8 it climbs the last 3 m and is out, so the answer is 8. The explanation under the answer walks through steps like these.
- Draw a picture or a small table: most maths riddles become easy on paper.
- Work backwards when the riddle tells you the end result.
- Check your answer against every clue before pressing Check.
Errors and how to fix them
- βYour answerβ¦β shown in red: you pressed Check with an empty box. Type a guess first.
- βNot quite. Try again, or take a hint.β with the right number: number answers are checked by comparing the numbers in your answer with ours, in any order. Units and currency (kg, km/h, βΉ, years) are optional, but an extra number in your answer (for example a working step) makes it fail. Type only the final answer.
- Two-number answers: β12 and 8β, β8, 12β and β8 12β are all accepted.
- Large numbers: write 1000 or 1,000; both work.
- βYou have solved them all! πβ: with Not solved chosen there is nothing left. Switch back to All to play them again.
- My ticks and solved count are gone: progress is saved only in this browser on this device. A private (incognito) window, clearing site data, or another phone or browser starts from zero.
