What is it?
The Land Area Converter converts acres, hectares, square feet, square metres and gaj, and traditional units like bigha, biswa, kanal, marla, katha, guntha, cent and ground, with the size used in each state.
Who is it for?
Farmers, land buyers and sellers, property dealers, patwaris and lawyers, and NRIs dealing with family land in bigha, kanal, marla or acres.
How to use it
- Type the Value and pick the From unit.
- Every other unit is shown under In every unit; tap a value to copy it, or use Copy result.
- Tap ⇅ Swap to convert the other way.
Why are there so many bighas?
Bigha, katha and biswa are old local units, and their size changes between states and sometimes districts. A bigha in Uttar Pradesh is about 27,000 sq ft, while in West Bengal it is 14,400 sq ft. Always pick your state’s option.
Common Punjab and Haryana units
- 1 marla = 272.25 sq ft; 1 kanal = 20 marla = 5,445 sq ft; 1 acre = 8 kanal.
- Some towns and urban plots use a 225 sq ft marla. Check which one your registry or developer uses.
Before buying or selling land
- Confirm the unit size with the revenue office (patwari, tehsil) or your land records (jamabandi, 7/12 extract, khatauni).
- Get the plot measured on the ground by a surveyor. The Area Calculator’s Irregular plot option helps you check a four-sided plot from its sides and one diagonal.
- Write areas in sq ft or sq m in agreements, alongside the local unit, to avoid disputes.
Errors and how to fix them
- Result differs from land records: a different state’s bigha or marla size is selected; choose yours.
- A result looks hugely wrong: check the From unit. Picking a unit that looks similar to the one you meant is the most common mistake.
- Very long decimals: results show up to 10 significant digits; round to what you need.
