What is it?
The HRA Exemption Calculator works out how much of your House Rent Allowance is tax-free and how much is taxable.
Who is it for?
Salaried employees paying rent who are deciding between tax regimes or submitting investment proofs.
How to use it
Enter Basic salary + DA a month, HRA received a month and Rent paid a month. Tick I live in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata or Chennai if that applies. Read Exempt a month, HRA exempt a year and HRA taxable a year. The answer appears as you type; there is no Calculate button. Pick your Currency at the top if asked, then tap Copy result or Share on WhatsApp.
The rule
The exempt HRA is the lowest of three amounts:
- Actual HRA received.
- Rent paid − 10% of basic (+ DA).
- 50% of basic + DA in the four metro cities, 40% elsewhere.
The calculator shows all three and which one applies (Rule).
Important
- HRA exemption is only in the old tax regime. Under the new regime HRA is fully taxable. Compare both regimes in the Income Tax Calculator.
- Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Pune count as non-metro (40%) for this rule.
- Give your employer rent receipts; if yearly rent is above ₹1 lakh, also the landlord’s PAN.
- Paying rent to your parents is allowed if they really own the house and declare the rent as income. Rent to your spouse is generally not accepted.
This is an estimate to help you plan, not financial or tax advice. For big decisions, check the latest rules and talk to a qualified adviser.
Errors and how to fix them
- Exempt HRA is zero: rent is less than 10% of basic; it must be more for any exemption.
