Hindi Typing Practice: Inscript and Remington (GAIL) on a Normal Keyboard

What is it?

Hindi Typing Practice lets you learn Hindi (हिंदी) typing without installing anything. With Inscript or Remington (GAIL) selected, type on your normal English keyboard and Hindi appears; the on-screen keyboard shows the Hindi letter on every key and lights up the next one with the finger to use. My Hindi keyboard is for devices that already have a Hindi keyboard.

Who is it for?

Candidates for government typing tests (SSC, court, state clerk exams), office staff who type Hindi letters, and students learning Hindi on a computer.

How to use it

  1. Choose Keyboard: Inscript, Remington (GAIL) or My Hindi keyboard.
  2. Choose Practise: Letters, Words or Sentences (e.g. “हम रोज सुबह जल्दी उठते हैं।”).
  3. Click the box (“Type on your normal keyboard: Hindi appears”) and type, following “Next key: …”.
  4. When you finish, read WPM and accuracy and press Next text; New text skips; Try a sample (watch) shows a demo.

Inscript or Remington?

Inscript is the Indian government standard built into Windows, Android and Mac, logical and easy to learn. Remington (GAIL) follows the old typewriter (Kruti Dev) layout still asked in many government tests, and here it produces Unicode text. Learn the one your exam names.

Tips

  • Inscript home row: ो े ् ि ु on the left hand and प र क त च ट on the right.
  • Half letters in Inscript: letter, then ् (the D key), then the next letter: क ् ष makes क्ष.
  • Speed for Hindi is counted the same way (5 characters = 1 word), so Hindi WPM looks lower than English.

Errors and how to fix them

  • A letter turns red, or you see “Oops: press Backspace…”: you pressed the wrong key. Press Backspace and type the right one. Mistakes you leave in lower your accuracy.
  • English letters appear: with Inscript/Remington selected, turn off any Hindi keyboard on your computer; the tool converts keys itself. With My Hindi keyboard, “Switch your phone or computer keyboard to Hindi, then type.”
  • ि goes before the letter in Remington: that is how the typewriter layout works: type ि first, then the consonant (f + d = कि).
  • Phone keyboard covers the text: scroll a little or turn the phone sideways. Touch typing is a skill for physical keyboards, so for real progress use a computer or a tablet with a keyboard.
