What is it?
The Freelance Rate Calculator works out the Minimum hourly rate and Day rate (8 h) you need to earn the income you want.
Who is it for?
Freelancers, consultants, designers, developers and tutors setting rates that cover costs and time off.
How to use it
- Enter the Yearly income you want (after costs) and your Business costs a year (software, internet, equipment).
- Enter Billable hours a week: hours you can actually charge clients for.
- Enter Weeks off a year (holidays, sick, quiet) and the Tax set aside (%).
- Read Billable hours a year, Revenue needed a year and the rates.
Be realistic about billable hours
Freelancers spend a lot of time on unpaid work: finding clients, emails, invoices, learning. 20–30 billable hours a week is typical, not 40. Using 40 sets your rate far too low.
Using the result
- This is your floor. Charge more for urgent work, specialist skills and well-known clients.
- Many freelancers quote per project instead of per hour; estimate the hours and multiply.
- Remember there is no employer PF, paid leave or health insurance: put money aside for them.
- In India, GST registration is needed above the turnover limit, and export of services has its own rules.
Errors and how to fix them
- “Enter your hours (more than 0)”: billable hours can’t be zero; also check weeks off are under 52.
