Decimal to Fraction: Simplest Form, Mixed Numbers, Repeating Decimals

What is it?

The Decimal to Fraction Converter turns a decimal like 0.75 into a fraction like 3/4, and back. It shows the simplest fraction, the mixed number, the decimal and the percent.

Who is it for?

Students, carpenters and engineers using inch fractions, and cooks converting measures.

How to use it

  1. Type a decimal like 0.75, or a fraction like 3/4, in the box.
  2. Read the Simplest fraction, Mixed number, Decimal and Percent below.

The answer appears as you type; there is no Calculate button. Tap Copy result to copy it, or Share on WhatsApp to send it.

How it works

0.75 = 75/100, and dividing top and bottom by their HCF (25) gives 3/4. Mixed numbers split off whole parts: 2.375 = 19/8 = 2 3/8.

Repeating decimals

0.333… is exactly 1/3, but a typed 0.333 is 333/1000. Type more digits (0.3333333) and the converter finds the nearest simple fraction, 1/3. The same for 0.142857… = 1/7.

Uses

  • Inch measurements: 0.625 inch = 5/8 inch, as on tape measures and drill bits.
  • Recipes: 0.75 cup = ¾ cup.
  • School maths answers that must be in simplest form.

Worked examples

  • 0.125 = 125/1000 = 1/8 (divide by 125).
  • 2.75 = 275/100 = 11/4 = 2 3/4.
  • 3/8 = 0.375 = 37.5%.
  • 0.1666667 ≈ 1/6 (a repeating decimal typed with enough digits).

Tape measures and drill bits

Inch tapes are marked in 1/16 inch. To read 0.3125 inch, convert it: 5/16 inch. For 0.33 inch, the nearest sixteenth is 5/16 (0.3125).
