What is it?
The Depreciation Calculator spreads the cost of an asset (machine, vehicle, computer, furniture) over its useful life and shows the schedule year by year.
Who is it for?
Business owners, accountants and students working out asset depreciation for books or tax.
How to use it
- Enter the Cost of the asset, its Value at the end (salvage) and Useful life in years.
- Choose the Method: Straight line (same every year), Written-down value (reducing balance) or Double declining balance.
- For WDV, enter a WDV rate, or leave 0 to work it out from cost, salvage and life.
Which method?
- Straight line: equal depreciation every year. Common in company accounts (Companies Act, Schedule II, uses useful lives).
- Written-down value: a fixed % of the remaining value each year, so more in early years. Indian income tax uses WDV with block rates, for example 15% for most plant and machinery, 40% for computers.
- Double declining: twice the straight-line rate on the remaining value; fast early depreciation, often used in the US for some assets.
Good to know
- Under Indian tax rules, assets used for less than 180 days in their first year get half the year’s depreciation.
- Land doesn’t depreciate; buildings do.
Check your accountant’s method and rates for official books and tax returns.
Errors and how to fix them
- “Enter the useful life (more than 0)”: fill in the years.
- Salvage above cost: salvage must be less than cost.
