Compound Interest Calculator: Compounding Frequency and Monthly Additions

What is it?

The Compound Interest Calculator shows how a Starting amount grows when interest earns interest, with an optional amount to Add every month, and a year-by-year table.

Who is it for?

Savers comparing deposits, students learning compounding, and anyone seeing how regular savings grow over years.

How to use it

Enter the Starting amount, Interest rate (yearly), Time in years, how often it is Compounded (Yearly, Half-yearly, Quarterly, Monthly or Daily), and optionally a monthly addition. Read the Final amount, Total put in and Interest earned. The answer appears as you type; there is no Calculate button. Tap Copy result to copy it, or Share on WhatsApp to send it.

Does compounding frequency matter?

A little. At 8% a year, ₹1 lakh for 10 years becomes about ₹2.16 lakh compounded yearly and ₹2.22 lakh compounded monthly. Time and rate matter much more than frequency.

Which frequency to choose

  • Indian bank FDs: quarterly.
  • Savings accounts: interest is worked out daily and paid quarterly or half-yearly.
  • PPF and EPF: yearly (with monthly calculation); use their own calculators for exact results.

Good to know

Results are before tax and inflation. Compound interest works against you on debts too: unpaid credit card balances compound every month.

Errors and how to fix them

  • “Enter the time in years”: time is empty or zero; 6 months is 0.5.
