What is it?
The Code Beautifier makes minified or badly indented code readable again. Paste JavaScript, JSON, CSS, HTML or SQL and get it neatly indented with one statement per line, using the proven js-beautify and sql-formatter libraries. The language is detected automatically, or you can choose it. Only spaces and line breaks change; the code does exactly the same thing.
Who is it for?
Developers reading a .min.js file, bloggers tidying a theme’s CSS, students who received code on one long line, and anyone reviewing JSON from an API.
How to use it
- Paste your code into Messy or minified code, or tap Try a sample.
- Leave the language on Auto, or pick JS, CSS, HTML or SQL. Choose the Indent.
- The Beautified code updates as you type, with a note such as “✓ JavaScript · 14 lines”. Copy it or download it.
Worked example
The sample is one long line: function total(items){let sum=0;for(const i of items){…}}. After beautifying, each statement is on its own line, the for loop body is indented, and the closing braces line up, so you can see the logic at a glance.
For HTML with <script> and <style> blocks, the code inside them is beautified too. Strings and comments are never changed.
Is my code uploaded?
No. The checker is downloaded once from a public download server (jsDelivr or cdnjs) and then runs inside your browser. Your code never leaves your device, so it is safe for work and client projects.
Errors and how to fix them
- Wrong language guessed: for example CSS that starts with an unusual selector. Pick the language yourself.
- Variable names are still a, b, c: a minifier renamed them; beautifying restores layout, not original names.
- Output looks the same as the input: the code may already be formatted, or the language guess was wrong.
- Nothing happens, or a “Could not load” message: the first use downloads the library. Check your internet connection, turn off an ad or script blocker for this site, and reload the page.
