What is it?
Code Typing Practice gives short, realistic snippets in JavaScript, Python, HTML, CSS, SQL and Java to copy, so you get fast at braces, brackets, quotes, semicolons and arrows. It is monospaced like an editor, and after Enter the next line’s indent is typed for you. Results show speed, accuracy and how many symbols the snippet had.
Who is it for?
Programming students, new developers who find symbols slow them down, and teachers of coding classes who want typing practice with real syntax.
How to use it
- Choose a language.
- “Type the code. Press Enter for a new line: the indent is added for you.” Type brackets and quotes exactly.
- Mistakes turn red; press Backspace to fix them.
- See your result (“… WPM, …”) and press Next snippet; Try a sample (watch) shows a demo.
Why code speed is lower
Symbols need Shift and far reaches with the little fingers, so even 70 WPM typists drop to 35–45 on code. That is normal. Speed is counted the standard way (5 characters = 1 word), symbols included.
Tips
- On QWERTY, ( and ) are Shift + 9 and 0, by the right ring and little fingers; { } [ ] are the right little finger.
- Practise your main language most, but symbols carry over.
- The snippets are short examples written for this site, not copied code.
Errors and how to fix them
- A letter turns red: you pressed the wrong key. Press Backspace and type the right one. Mistakes you leave in lower your accuracy.
- Indent is doubled: don’t type the spaces at the start of a line; they are added after Enter. Tab inserts four spaces if you need extra.
- Quotes look wrong: type straight quotes (' and "); smart-quote features of some keyboards must be off.
- Nothing happens when I type: click or tap inside the typing box first so it has the cursor. Turn Caps Lock off, and close other apps that use keyboard shortcuts.
