Blood Alcohol Calculator: Estimate BAC (and Why Not to Drive)

What is it?

The Blood Alcohol Calculator gives an Estimated blood alcohol, the Hours until about zero, and compares it with the Legal driving limit in India.

Who is it for?

Adults who want to understand how alcohol builds up and why waiting or not driving matters. Not for deciding whether to drive.

How to use it

Enter the Number of drinks, the Size of one drink, Your weight, Sex and Hours since the first drink. The answer appears as you type; there is no Calculate button. Tap Copy result to copy it, or Share on WhatsApp to send it.

Never use it to decide whether to drive

A rough Widmark estimate only. Food, health, medicine and tiredness change it a lot. Never use it to decide whether to drive; the safe level for driving is zero. Reaction time is affected well below the legal limit. Take a cab, use a designated driver, or stay over.

Limits and drinks

  • India’s legal limit is 30 mg per 100 ml of blood (0.03%), lower than in many countries. Many countries have even lower or zero limits for new and commercial drivers.
  • Drink sizes differ: a peg of whisky (30–60 ml), a large beer bottle (650 ml) and a glass of wine hold very different amounts of alcohol. Check the size you choose.

Sobering up

The body removes alcohol at a fixed rate, roughly one standard drink an hour. Coffee, cold showers and food don’t speed it up. You can still be over the limit the next morning.

Errors and how to fix them

  • “Enter your weight (more than 0)”: the weight box is empty or 0.
  • The result is lower than a breath test showed: this is a rough formula. Food, medicines, health and drink sizes all change the real level, so never rely on it to decide whether you can drive.
