Online Calculator: History, Percent Key and Keyboard Use

What is it?

The Calculator is a simple everyday calculator that shows the whole sum as you type and keeps a history of your answers.

Who is it for?

Everyone needing quick sums: shopkeepers, students, homemakers and office staff, on a phone or computer.

How to use it

  • Tap the keys, or type on your keyboard: digits, + − * /, Enter for =, Backspace and Esc.
  • Open History and help to see past sums. Use this again puts an old sum back; Use the answer continues from a result. Clear history empties it.
  • Copy puts the result on your clipboard. M+, M−, MR and MC add to, subtract from, recall and clear a memory, as on a shop calculator.

Order of operations

The calculator follows maths rules (BODMAS / PEMDAS): 2 + 3 × 4 = 14, not 20. Pocket calculators that work left to right give 20. Use brackets to be sure: (2 + 3) × 4 = 20.

The % key

200 + 10% means 200 plus 10% of 200 = 220, like most shop calculators. To find 10% of 200 on its own, type 200 × 10%. For other percentage questions, the Percentage Calculator is clearer.

Errors

  • Something is missing at the end: the sum ends with an operator or an open bracket.
  • Unexpected …: two operators in a row or a typo.

History is kept in this browser only.

Errors and how to fix them

  • “Something is missing at the end” or “Unexpected …”: remove a trailing operator or extra symbol.
