XML Sitemap Generator: Make a Sitemap.xml for Google

What is it?

The XML Sitemap Generator turns a list of page addresses, full links or short paths, into a valid sitemap.xml, with duplicates removed and special characters escaped, ready for Google Search Console.

Who is it for?

Owners of hand-built websites, developers launching static sites, and SEO beginners helping Google find every page. (Blogger and WordPress already make sitemaps automatically.)

How to use it

  1. Paste one address per line. For short paths like /about, fill in the Site address (for short paths).
  2. Set Last changed (YYYY-MM-DD), Change frequency and Priority.
  3. Download sitemap.xml, upload it to your site’s root folder, and submit it in Google Search Console.

Good to know

Google mostly ignores change frequency and priority; correct addresses and honest last-changed dates matter more. Include only pages you want in search: no login, thank-you or duplicate pages. Blogger’s automatic sitemap is at /sitemap.xml.

Errors and how to fix them

  • Not full web addresses: …: those lines need https:// or the site address filled in.
  • “A sitemap can hold 50,000 addresses. Split them into several files”
  • Write the date as YYYY-MM-DD, for example …
  • Search Console says “couldn’t fetch”: check the file opens at yoursite.com/sitemap.xml.

Questions people ask

  • Does Blogger need this? No, Blogger makes its own sitemap at /sitemap.xml.
  • How often should I update it? Whenever you add or remove pages.
