WhatsApp makes photos and videos smaller so they send fast, which can make them look blurry. To keep them sharp, choose HD quality when you send, set HD as your default, or send the file as a document to keep the exact original.
Three ways, from simple to best quality
- Standard: the normal, smaller picture. Fine for everyday chats and uses less data.
- HD quality: clearer and bigger. Good for family photos and videos you want to keep.
- Send as document: the original file with nothing changed. Best for photos for printing, exam forms or work.
Choose HD while sending (Android and iPhone)
- Open the chat and take a new photo or video, or choose one from your gallery.
- On the editing screen, look for the HD button at the top.
- Tap it and choose HD quality, then tap Send.
The photo in the chat shows a small "HD" mark. Depending on your version, the HD button may not show for every photo; then the default setting below decides.
Make HD the default
- Open Settings (Android: ⋮ › Settings; iPhone: Settings at the bottom).
- Tap Storage and data.
- Tap Media upload quality and choose HD quality.
You can still pick Standard for single photos when sending.
Send as a document for full quality
Tap the attach button › Document, then browse to the photo or video (Android: Browse other docs or the gallery list; iPhone: Choose photo or video or the Files app). The receiver gets the untouched file and opens it with their gallery or file app. Documents can be up to 2 GB. Full steps: send documents and big files.
Good to know
- HD files use more mobile data and take longer to send and download.
- A photo already sent cannot be upgraded. Send it again in HD.
- HD is not available for Status updates or your profile photo.
- A weak network can still reduce quality, even in HD.
- If the receiver's phone does not auto-download, they may see a blurry preview until they tap to download. See media auto-download.
If it doesn't work
- No HD button: update WhatsApp.
- Video too big: trim it in the editor, or send it as a document.
- Photos still blurry after saving: they may have been received in Standard. Ask the sender to resend in HD or as a document.
Safety tip
Sharp photos of Aadhaar, PAN, cheques or bank cards are easy to misuse. Send such documents only to people and offices you trust, and consider view once for them.
This is GroupChatOn’s own easy guide. We are not WhatsApp and are not linked with WhatsApp or Meta. WhatsApp sometimes changes its menus: if a button looks different on your phone, update WhatsApp from the Play Store or App Store.
