A WhatsApp event is an invitation card inside a chat. You add the name, date and time, and members tap to say if they are coming. WhatsApp keeps the list of who replied, so you know how many people to expect.
Create an event
- Open the group (events also work in a personal chat and in community announcements).
- Tap the attach button: paperclip on Android, + on iPhone, + on WhatsApp Web.
- Tap Event.
- Type the event name, for example "Dadi's 80th birthday".
- Choose the date and time. You can also add an end time, a description (address, dress code, what to bring) and a location.
- For an online meeting, turn on the option to add a WhatsApp call link, so people can join a call from the event.
- Tap Send (or Create). The event card appears in the chat.
Reply to an event (RSVP)
- Tap the event card in the chat.
- Choose Going, Maybe or Not going. Some versions also let you say you are bringing a guest.
- You can change your answer any time before the event.
- To see all upcoming events, tap the group name at the top › Events.
Edit or cancel
Only the person who created the event can edit or cancel it. Open the event card, tap Edit, change the details and save, or choose Cancel event. People who said Going or Maybe get a notification about the change.
Things to know
- New members cannot see events created before they joined. To include them, delete the old event and create a new one.
- You cannot forward an event to another chat or invite people outside the chat. Create a separate event there.
- If disappearing messages is on, you may not be able to create events far ahead. Turn it off for the group first.
- Only admins may be allowed to post if the group is set that way (group admin settings).
If it doesn't work
- No Event option: update WhatsApp; older versions do not have it.
- Members say they can't see it: they joined after it was made, or have an old version.
- Want a quick headcount without dates? Use a poll instead.
Safety tip
For public or large groups, don't put your full home address in an event description that many strangers can see. Share the exact address privately with guests you know.
This is GroupChatOn’s own easy guide. We are not WhatsApp and are not linked with WhatsApp or Meta. WhatsApp sometimes changes its menus: if a button looks different on your phone, update WhatsApp from the Play Store or App Store.
