SIP Calculator: Future Value, Expected Returns and Realistic Planning

What is it?

The SIP Calculator estimates what a monthly investment in a mutual fund could grow to, with Total invested, Estimated gains and Future value, year by year.

Who is it for?

First-time and regular mutual fund investors, parents saving for children, and anyone planning long-term wealth.

How to use it

Enter the Monthly investment, an Expected return (yearly %) and the number of Years. The answer appears as you type; there is no Calculate button. Pick your Currency at the top if asked, then tap Copy result or Share on WhatsApp.

Choosing an expected return

  • Use conservative figures: for example 10–12% a year for diversified equity funds over 10+ years, 6–8% for debt funds. Past returns don’t guarantee the future.
  • Try two or three rates to see a range rather than one number.

Why real results differ

  • Returns from mutual funds are not guaranteed; the calculator assumes a steady yearly return, compounded monthly. Real markets go up and down, so the final value depends on the order of returns, especially near the end.
  • Expense ratios, exit loads and capital-gains tax reduce what you keep.
  • Missing SIP instalments lowers the result.

Tips

  • Starting early matters more than the amount: 10 extra years can double the result.
  • Increase your SIP every year as your income grows: see the Step-up SIP Calculator.
  • Think in today’s money: ₹1 crore in 25 years will buy much less than today. The Inflation Calculator shows how much.

Mutual fund investments are subject to market risks; read all scheme-related documents carefully.

Errors and how to fix them

  • Unrealistic results: check the return is a yearly % (12, not 0.12).
