Recipe Scaler: Double, Halve or Scale a Recipe for Any Number of People

What is it?

The Recipe Scaler multiplies every ingredient so a recipe serves a different number of people, and shows the factor to Multiply everything by.

Who is it for?

Home cooks feeding more or fewer people, caterers, tiffin services and home bakers.

How to use it

  1. Enter how many the Recipe serves and how many I want to serve.
  2. Paste the Ingredients, one per line, like 2 cups rice, 1/2 tsp salt or 500 g chicken. Numbers and fractions are scaled; words stay the same.

Scale with care

  • Spices, salt and chillies: scale up a little less (about 75%) when doubling or tripling, then taste and add.
  • Baking: eggs can’t be split easily; round to whole eggs and adjust liquid slightly. Use a bigger tin or bake in batches, not a deeper cake.
  • Cooking time doesn’t scale with quantity; bigger batches take somewhat longer, so check for doneness.
  • Pressure cooker: don’t fill beyond two-thirds (half for dal and rice); cook in two batches if needed.

To convert cups and spoons to grams, use the Cooking Measurement Converter.

Worked example

A recipe for 4 needs 1 1/2 cups milk; for 10 people multiply by 2.5: 3.75 cups.

Errors and how to fix them

  • “Enter the servings (more than 0)”
  • A line didn’t scale: put the number first, like “2 cups rice”.
