What is it?
JSON Compare checks two JSON documents by meaning and lists every added, removed and changed value with its path.
Who is it for?
Developers comparing API responses or configs, testers checking expected vs actual data, and translators comparing language files.
How to use it
- Paste the First (old) JSON and the Second (new) JSON. Swap exchanges them; Clear empties both; Try a sample loads an example.
- Read the Differences, each with a path like
user.address.cityoritems[2].price. Copy differences to paste into a ticket.
What counts as a difference
- Key order and spacing are ignored: Same data ✓ (key order and spacing are ignored).
- Types matter:
"30"(text) and30(number) are different. - Array order matters:
[1,2]and[2,1]are different lists.
Uses
- Checking what changed between two API responses or config versions.
- Comparing settings exports before and after an update.
If a box shows an error, the JSON isn’t valid; check it with the JSON Formatter first.
Everything happens inside your browser; nothing you type is sent to us.
Worked example
Old: {"name":"Asha","age":30,"city":"Pune"}. New: {"age":31,"name":"Asha","phone":"98…"}.
Differences: age changed 30 → 31, city removed, phone added. The different key order isn’t reported, because it doesn’t change the data.
Common uses
- API changes: compare yesterday’s and today’s response to see why an app broke.
- Config files: compare settings between test and live servers.
- Translation files: find keys missing from one language file.
Tips
- Arrays of objects are compared position by position. If the order changed, sort both first (by id) for a meaningful comparison.
- Remove values that always change, like timestamps or request IDs, to see only the real differences.
- For plain text files, use Text Compare (Diff) instead.
Errors and how to fix them
- “Paste JSON in both boxes”: one side is empty.
- An error naming the first or second JSON: that side isn’t valid JSON; fix it in the JSON Formatter.
- Too many differences in arrays: the items are in a different order; sort both first.
