Emergency Fund Calculator: How Much to Keep and Where

What is it?

The Emergency Fund Calculator sets your Emergency fund target and how much to Save every month to build it.

Who is it for?

Salaried people, business owners and freelancers building a safety net before investing, especially those with EMIs or dependants.

How to use it

  1. Enter Essential monthly expenses (rent, food, EMIs, bills). Leave out things you could stop in an emergency, like eating out and shopping.
  2. Choose the Months to cover: 3 months (steady job, two incomes), 6 months (recommended), 9, or 12 months (business owner, one income).
  3. Enter what you’ve Saved so far and the Months to build it.

What it’s for

Job loss, a medical bill not covered by insurance, urgent home or car repairs, or helping family. It is not for holidays or shopping sales.

Where to keep it

Keep it somewhere safe and quick to reach: a savings account, sweep-in FD or liquid fund. Many people split it: one month’s expenses in the savings account and the rest in a sweep-in FD or liquid fund. Avoid shares and long-term FDs with penalties.

Tips

  • Build this before investing for long-term goals.
  • Health and term insurance protect the fund from the biggest shocks.
  • After using it, rebuild it first.

Errors and how to fix them

  • Nothing left to save: what you’ve saved already meets the target.
