Crossword Maker: Kid-Friendly Crosswords and Your Own Words With Clues

What is it?

The Crossword Maker makes crosswords for children, ready to solve on screen or print. Choose a ready-made one (animals, fruits, space, my body, colours) or type your own words and clues, such as SUN - It shines in the day, and it builds the grid.

Who is it for?

Children who like word puzzles, teachers turning topic vocabulary into a revision crossword, and parents wanting a printable quiet-time activity.

How to use it

  1. Choose a Puzzle, or My own words and type “Your words and clues”, one per line: WORD - clue.
  2. “Tap a clue or a square and type the answer.” The cursor moves along the word; Backspace goes back; arrow keys move.
  3. Press ✓ Check to colour right and wrong squares, or Reveal to show the answers (“Here are the answers.”).
  4. Press Print or Print with answers; New layout rearranges the grid.

Worked example

For a science lesson type: ROOT - It takes water from the soil, LEAF - It makes food using sunlight, STEM - It holds the plant up, SEED - A new plant grows from it. The tool crosses them where letters match and numbers the clues across and down.

Tips

  • Solve the shortest words first: their letters help with longer ones.
  • Keep clues short and in words children know.
  • Print one copy without answers for each child and one with answers for marking.

Errors and how to fix them

  • Add at least two words, one per line, like: SUN - It shines in the day: the tool needs two or more words, each with a hyphen between the word and the clue.
  • A word did not fit: words need a shared letter with others to cross. Add words that share letters, or press New layout.
  • Typing on the phone jumps: tap the square first, then type one letter at a time.
