Animals and Their Names: Sounds, Baby Names, Homes and a Quiz

What is it?

Animals and Their Names is a picture book of 45 animals with a quiz. Tap an animal to see its name in English and Hindi, what sound it makes, what its baby is called, where it lives and a fun fact, read aloud: “This is a cow. A cow says moo. A baby cow is called a calf.”

Who is it for?

Pre-school and primary children, parents teaching animal names in two languages, and teachers covering “animals and their young” or “animal homes” in EVS lessons.

How to use it

  1. Pick a group: All, Farm, Pets, Wild, Sea, Birds or insects.
  2. Tap an animal. Its card shows the English and Hindi names, sound, baby name, home and fact, and the device reads it.
  3. Switch to Quiz for ten questions such as “Who says moo?”, “What is a baby horse called?” or “Which one is the …?”
  4. Tap an answer; the score shows at the end with stars.

Fun facts to talk about

  • A baby kangaroo is a joey; a baby goat is a kid; a young crab starts life as a larva.
  • An octopus has three hearts, and a camel’s hump stores fat, not water.
  • Crabs walk sideways.

Tips for parents and teachers

  • Make the animal sound together before pressing the card.
  • Use the Hindi name for a quick bilingual game: say “गाय” and let your child find the cow.
  • Look for the same animals on your next farm or zoo visit.

Errors and how to fix them

  • No sound when I tap: the words are read by your device’s own voice. Turn the volume up and silent mode off, and check that a text-to-speech voice is installed (Android: Settings › Accessibility › Text-to-speech; iPhone: Settings › Accessibility › Spoken Content; Windows: Settings › Time & language › Speech). Hindi words need a Hindi voice; without one the tool says them in English or stays quiet.
  • Some animals have no sound: animals like crabs, fish or butterflies don’t make a sound we can name, so the card leaves it out and the quiz never asks it.
  • “Not quite: the answer is shown in green”: only the first tap counts. Look at the green answer, say it aloud together, and the next question comes on its own. At the end the tool shows the score with stars (🌱 to ⭐⭐⭐).
